Music in the Great Hall was founded in 1974 by Virginia Reinecke and Eileen Twynham at Maryvale Preparatory School in Brooklandville, Maryland.
Music in the Great Hall enjoyed continued success until November 1985 when it experienced a sudden interruption. The Baltimore County Fire Department, after a routine check, declared that not the 120 chairs they found, but 49 would be permitted in the Great Hall at Maryvale.
This meant moving the series to St. Timothy's School in Stevenson and later to The Church of the Redeemer on Charles Street. It was on 22 September 1989 that Music in the Great Hall presented its first concert at its current venue with seating for 225, a fine piano, and excellent acoustics. Meanwhile, Ms. Reinecke had become sole director of the organization. Virginia Reinecke retired as Artistic Director at the end of the 30th season. Seasons 31 through 35 were under the direction of Baltimore pianist and teacher Adam Mahonske.
Now in its 36th season, the series continues under the exciting new artistic leadership of Baltimore pianist Lura Johnson.
